Daily Prayer of the Church

The voice of prayer is never silent
To quote the well-known hymn:

We thank Thee that Thy church unsleeping,
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And rests not now by day or night.

As o'er each continent and island
The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,
Nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking
Our brethren 'neath the western sky,
And hour by hour fresh lips are making
Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

The daily prayer of the Church (known as the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office) rolls on, day after day. It is the heartbeat of the Church’s life. It marks the hours of each day and sanctifies the day with prayer.

One of the blessings of recent times is that increasing numbers of people – not just the clergy – are praying the daily prayers of the Church. Often they do it completely alone. But in fact when you are praying, your prayers are always offered with the worship of the whole Church on earth, and with the worship of the angels, the archangels and all the heavenly host.
